Question 4 (24 marks)

  • In this question, you will be asked to recommend an action that is likely to solve a given problem.
  • You are expected to justify your views using material drawn from the sources and/or any of your own experience and evidence.
  • Aim for four or more developed points with clear evidence.
  • The response must be well structured in paragraphs and a clear judgement reached.

There are two types of questions:


 
TYPE 1

  • A government report concludes that a historical site is being destroyed by tourists. The following actions are being considered to protect the site for the future:
  • restrict the number of tourists visiting the site;
  • increase the cost of transport and entry to the site;
  • close the site completely and create a protected area.

Which one of these actions would you recommend to the government, and why? In your answer you should:

  • state your recommendation;
  • give reasons to support your choice;
  • use the material in the Sources and/or any of your own ideas;
  • consider different arguments and perspectives.

STRUCTURE FOR TYPE 1 QUESTION

  • Clearly state your one recommendation in your opening sentence.
  • How would your chosen action be better than the others? Consider 3 reasons well supported with evidence.
  • What difficulties, costs, obstacles or challenges would make the other two choices less preferable?
  • Respond to those opposed to your claim.
  • Make a concluding statement which may briefly extend the proposal.:

What to consider for your reasons?

  • How well would the action solve the problem?quickly/slowly?permanently/temporarily?definitely/maybe?
    • What are the costs? Who would pay? Is it worth it?
    • Might anybody’s perspective (e.g. culture or vested interest) make them oppose the action? If so, are they powerful enough to stand in the way?
    • how long it might take to make a difference
    • barriers to change and the difficulties of changing individual behaviour.

TYPE 2

‘All employees should be encouraged to work remotely.’ Do you agree with this statement?

In your answer, you should:

•     state your opinion

•     give reasons and evidence to support your opinion

•     use the material in the sources and/or any of your own ideas

•     consider different arguments and perspectives.
