Structural features relate to the organization and layout of a text, how it’s divided, and how information is presented.

  • Openings- It introduces the main ideas and sets stage for the topic.
  • Conclusions- Summarizes key ideas, gives the writer’s opinion as well as offering some final thoughts about a subject.
  • Use of titles and subheadings- they make a text easier to navigate by drawing attention to specific information.
  • Use of varied sentence structures- They add a dramatic effect depending on the length
  • Use of bullet points- they summarise and simplify a range of ideas
  • Varied paragraph lengths- highlight significant points or to provide a detailed account.
  • Use of dialogue- helps shift focus from narration monotony. Character development is sustained through the use of dialogue.
  • Other structural features include lists, images, tables and citations.
